Getting Started Online
The odds of success are slim for any home business, even with hard work and long hours. But add in the right idea, talent and some luck, and you might be able to turn an online startup into a home-based income that lets you stay close to the things that matter most: your family and your pets.
The first task is making sure the idea behind your business — your product or service — is something people will pay for. Study the market and figure out whether there’s a need or desire for it. Figure out if you can measure up to the competition. Figure out if you’ll be able to weather the bad times; for a small business, there are likely to be a lot of them, especially early on.
Don’t worry: Your idea doesn’t have to be the best thing since sliced bread. Maybe you find something in your town that isn’t available elsewhere, decide there’s a market for it online, buy it locally, and resell it on eBay. Hardly a new concept, but it’s worked for many others. In any event, you should craft a business plan, whether or not you plan to show it to others.
You’ll have to make sure you’re in line with any government licensing and zoning laws, and you may want insurance for your business. Some startup money might be required at this point.
Some additional costs also factor in here: computer equipment, software, supplies, a home office setup, and necessary professional services (a lawyer or accountant, for example), if there are any. Budget and spend very cautiously, since the business itself may not pay off these costs right away.
Of course, these are the just the steps for getting started. The real labor is still in front of you. But the right mix of a good idea, ambition, skill, time, and hard work could give you the business you need to make a living from the comforts of your home.
